Abstract:

Low Density Parity Check [LDPC] codes are a recently rediscovered, powerful class of error correcting block codes.  Their performance can be exceptionally close to the Shannon limit. Modern computational power has made them practical,  mostly. This talk will give an introductory presentation of LDPC codes and the sum-product algorithm for decoding them.  Much of the talk will be based on the author's masters thesis work. Also, certain limitations of LDPC codes will be  discussed. In fact, these 'limitations' are invitations for further research.

BIOGRAPHY

Peter Jarvis completed a bachelors degreee at the University of California at San Diego with majors in Physics and Mathematics. After briefly working at Hughes Aircraft Company on high voltage diodes, he attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin at Madison  studying mathematics. He specialized in Fouirier Analysis under advisor Stephan Wainger, and completed his Ph.D. in 1992.  He was then hired as an assistant professor of mathematics at (then) Georgia College, and earned associate professor  rank in 1999. He took on the role of PreEngineering program advisor at Georgia College & State University, and  enrolled in the MSEE program at Mercer University. Despite temptations to specialize in either control theory or DSP,  he chose digital communications, with a particular specialization in error control coding, under Dr. Behanm Kamali.  He resigned from GC&SU in 2002 to be with his wife Elizabeth as she attended law school at Creighton University in  Omaha Nebraska. Upon her graduation in 2005 they moved to Castle Rock, Colorado. He recently began work as a subcontractor for Software Beret, Inc. (founded by Scott Ranville; www.softwareberet.com), and serves as the secretary of the Denver Chapter of the Signal Proessing Society. Peter is an avid outdoor enthusiast, with a specialization in rockclimbing, though recent obligation and lack of partners have made him feel like Tantalus.
